We have a local supplier of asparagus who keeps us stocked up in the short English season, traditionally accepted to begin on St George's Day and run until June. We can sometimes get asparagus from the Continent outside of this time but its never quite the same as having English!
Whether it is steamed, roasted, raw or grilled - asparagus has an unmistakable delicate flavouring.
Reasons to eat asparagus:
Excellent source of Vitamin K - helping to keep clotting stable and stave off neuronal damage in the brain. Recent research suggests this may be protective against the development of Alzheimer's.
Rich in folates and B vitamins, essential for normal enzymatic and metabolic functioning.
Rich in minerals, especially copper and iron.
Asparagus is a very good source of the flavonoid quercitin, strongly linked to a reduction in various chronic disorders such as cardiovascular disease.
